Stewart H. Greenfield Chairman

Stewart H. Greenfield is Chairman and co-founder of Alternative Investment Group.

Stewart co-founded Oak Investment Partners in 1978 and was Chairman and General Partner of the Oak venture funds until 1995. He previously held positions on the corporate staff at IBM and was Vice President and General Partner of the Sprout Venture Funds at DLJ from 1971 to 1974. From 1974 to 1978 he was co-founder of Charter Oak, a firm that assisted Xerox and 3M with technology strategy.

 

Stewart holds a B.A. from St. John’s College in Annapolis, MD, and served as Vice-Chairman of the Board of Visitors and a member of the Executive Committee of St. John’s (Annapolis and Santa Fe). He was a trustee of Commonfund Capital Group. He served on the boards of over 20 young technology companies. He is a trustee emeritus of The Nature Conservancy (CT) and since the late 80’s led tropical rainforest preservation projects in Latin America. He served on the boards of the Santa Fe Institute and the Opera Orchestra of New York. Stewart was on the advisory board of ConnCan, which has led tremendous improvements in educating minority students in Connecticut, and on the Environmental Policy Committee of the NRDC. Stewart is currently a member of the Investment Committee of Yale-New Haven Hospital.

David K. Storrs President, Chief Executive Officer

David K. Storrs is President and Chief Executive Officer and co-founder of Alternative Investment Group.

David is a member of the firm’s Management Committee.  David was formerly Trustee, Executive Vice President, and President of Commonfund, a multi-billion investment management organization serving endowments, foundations, and other non-profit institutions and led the formation of its alternative investment programs, including hedge funds, from 1982 to 1996. Prior to this, he was   Vice President with responsibility for international consulting at Rogers, Casey & Barksdale and RCB Trust Company from 1984 to 1986. David was a senior financial officer and the first Director of Investments at Yale University, from 1971 to 1984, where he restructured the endowment by introducing alternative asset classes. 

David holds an A.B. from Yale University as well as an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School.  He was a Trustee and member of the Finance Committee of TIAA-CREF (1994-2002) and a Director and member of the Finance Committee of the Alliance Capital money market funds (1988-2005).

Maria L.C. Tapia Managing Partner, Investments and Partner Relations

Maria L.C. Tapia is a managing partner of Alternative Investment Group responsible for manager oversight and partner relations. Maria is a member of the firm’s Management Committee.  She joined the firm in May 2002.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Maria was President of Commonfund Securities, Inc., a broker-dealer subsidiary that provides investment advice and client service to clients of Commonfund, a multi-billion investment management organization serving endowments, foundations, and other non-profit institutions. Maria also had fund oversight responsibility for Commonfund's global and international fixed income funds.  She was with Commonfund from 1991 to 2002.

 

Before Commonfund, Maria was a Director of Prudential Securities, Inc.’s Investment Banking Group where, from 1981 to 1990, she provided corporate finance and underwriting advice to U.S. and international corporate issuers, and organized investment funds for U.S. and international institutional investors.

Maria holds a B.S., cum laude, from the University of the Philippines and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania. Maria was a member of the Grumman Hill Montessori Association Investment Committee from 2002 to 2005.

Marita K. Wein Managing Partner, Investments and Risk Management

Marita K. Wein is a managing partner at Alternative Investment Group, responsible for risk management at all levels of the investment process, focusing primarily on operational/infrastructure risk at the investment manager level, portfolio level, and within the Alternative Investment Group organization. Marita is a member of the firm’s ESG and Sustainable Investing Committee, Valuation Committee and Management Committee.   She joined the firm in February 2003.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Marita was the Senior Vice President of Operations, Technology and Risk Management at Commonfund, a multi-billion investment management organization serving endowments, foundations, and other non-profit institutions. She was with Commonfund for 17 years.

Before Commonfund in 1987, Marita was a Senior Financial Analyst with Van Eck Associates for two years, providing financial analysis and portfolio recommendations for a global equity fund for U.S. and international institutional investors. She began her career as an Operations Manager with Shearson Lehman Brothers managing administrative and operations functions of a retail branch office in New York City from 1983 to 1985.

Marita graduated from Connecticut College with a B.A. in economics, graduated with Honors, and was elected to Phi Beta Kappa.

Ellen Kanner Partner, Chief Compliance Officer

Ellen Kanner is a partner and Chief Compliance Officer, overseeing the funds’ various legal and regulatory requirements.  Ellen is a member of the firm’s ESG and Sustainable Investing Committee and Valuation Committee.  Ellen joined Alternative Investment Group in January 1997.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Ellen worked at Citicorp, N.A., in the Distribution Finance department, from 1991 to 1995. Before Citicorp, Ellen worked for Presentations, Inc., a marketing consulting firm, providing marketing guidance as well as new business development proposals (1989 to 1990). Prior to Presentations, Inc., Ellen was an independent management consultant, developing internal procedures, contingency plans, and accounting structures for small businesses from 1985-1989. From 1981 to 1984, she worked as a Special Sales Manager for Holt, Rinehart and Winston publishers where she cultivated untapped book markets through non-traditional sales venues.

Ellen holds an A.B. from Vassar College and an M.B.A. from The Stern School, New York University.

Richard Cheung Partner, Investments

Richard Cheung is a partner at Alternative Investment Group responsible for portfolio construction and is portfolio manager of Alternative Investments, L.P. and Alternative Investments Institutional Master Fund Ltd.  He joined the firm in August 2005 from Pine Grove Associates, a multi-billion fund of funds. At Pine Grove Associates, Richard was an investment analyst focused on low volatility strategies and managers. Rich’s other work experience includes positions as an investment banking analyst with UBS, a business consultant with Arthur Andersen, and a merger and acquisition associate with Business Development Asia.

Rich holds a B.S. from the School of Engineering and Applied Science at Columbia University and an M.B.A. from The Stern School, New York University.

Chris Ayton Partner, Investments

Chris Ayton is a partner at Alternative Investment Group responsible for portfolio construction and is portfolio manager of Alternative Investments International, L.P.  He joined Alternative Investment Group in March 2008 and is based in London.  He has more than 20 years of manager research experience and focuses on identifying and evaluating strategies and managers, especially Europe and Asia-focused long/short equity managers, for the firm’s U.S. and international portfolios.

 

Previously, Chris was a senior member of the investment team at leading investment consulting firm Stamford Associates Limited where he spent 12 years, over half of which was as the firm’s Head of Manager Research.  While this position provided exposure to many investment strategies and geographies, Chris specialized in managers investing in Asian markets including Japan.  Chris was also instrumental in establishing Stamford Associates’ manager research disciplines that were adopted across the firm.  Prior to joining Stamford Associates in 1995, Chris worked at Bacon & Woodrow.

 

Chris graduated in 1994 with a BSc. in Economics from University of Southampton.

Sam Sussman Partner, Investment Strategy

Sam Sussman is a partner at Alternative Investmetn Group and Head of Investment Strategy. Sam is responsible for portfolio construction and is portfolio mananger of Alternative Investments Opportunity, L.P. and Alternative Investments Sustainability, L.P.  He is also responsible for directing the firm’s top-down research, identifying investment opportunities across strategies, industry sectors, and geographies and has primary responsibility for sourcing and monitoring the firm’s event-driven and credit managers. Sam is a member of the firm’s ESG and Sustainable Investing Committee.  He joined the firm in January 2012.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Sam was a Partner at Cadogan Management, where he was the head of research and responsible for sourcing and monitoring credit and event-driven equity managers. Before Cadogan, Sam was a Senior Managing Director at Bear Stearns where he spent nearly 13 years in the firm’s securitized products area. Prior to this, he was an associate/consultant at Corporate Decisions, Inc., a strategy consulting firm.

Sam holds a B.A., magna cum laude, in Economics from Yale University and an M.B.A. from Harvard Business School. Sam is also a Board Member and Treasurer for Gracie Gardens Cooperative Association and a Board Member of Agora Partnerships, a non-profit focused on global economic development.

Michael J. Tansley Partner, Chief Operating Officer

Michael Tansley is a partner and Chief Operating Officer at Alternative Investment Group and oversees the firm’s accounting, audit, tax, technology and financial controls, information management and administrative operations.  Michael is a member of the firm’s Management Committee and Valuation Committee.  He joined the firm in June 2011 from JP Morgan Funds Management, where he was Controller for the firm’s mutual funds.

 

Prior to that, he held leadership roles at GE Money, a division of GE Capital, and GE Asset Management, and was Senior Manager at Price Waterhouse.

 

Michael is a Chartered Accountant and received a BSc with honors in Aeronautical Engineering from Manchester University in Manchester, England.

Eugene Chin, CPA Director, Operations

Eugene Chin, Director of Operations, works on fund accounting and operations, interacts closely with the firm’s external service providers, and assists with various compliance matters. He joined the firm in June 2007.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Gene was a Senior Fund Accountant at FrontPoint Partners, a multi-strategy, alternative investment firm. Before FrontPoint, Gene was a Portfolio Analyst at SAC Capital Advisors, a multi-strategy, private asset management firm. At both firms, he performed monthly closings, product pricing, performance analysis and reporting. Gene’s other work experience includes positions as an Accounting Manager at GE Real Estate and as a Staff Auditor at Deloitte & Touche.

Gene holds a B.S. in Accounting from the Marriott School of Management at Brigham Young University and an M.B.A. in Finance from the School of Business at the University of Connecticut. He is also a Certified Public Accountant in the State of Connecticut and served on the Board of Directors of a local non-profit organization.

Juliette Menga, CFA Director, Associate Portfolio Manager

Juliette Menga is a Director and Associate Portfolio Manager at Alternative Investment Group. She has manager sourcing and monitoring responsibilities for all Funds.  She has portfolio construction and management responsibilities for the Alternative Investments Opportunity, L.P. and Alternative Investments Sustainability, L.P.  Juliette also works closely with the firm’s head of investment strategy to define the firm’s strategic investment direction.  Juliette is a member of the firm’s ESG and Sustainable Investing Committee.  She joined the firm in April 2007. Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Juliette was an Analyst at New York Life Investment Management (NYLIM), with primary responsibility for analyzing derivative investments.  Prior to NYLIM, Juliette worked as a Research Analyst for Excalibur Advisors LLC, a hedge fund advisory firm, responsible for research and portfolio construction analysis.

 

Juliette holds a dual B.S., cum laude, from Kennesaw State University in Mathematics and Computer Science and a M.S. in Financial Mathematics from Florida State University. Juliette is also a Chartered Financial Analyst.

Timothy Norton, CAIA Investment Analyst

Timothy Norton is an Investment Analyst at Alternative Investment Group and he is primarily responsible for portfolio construction analysis, potential manager research and monitoring of existing investments. He also provides support in operational risk management. Timothy joined the firm in 2016 from Mizuho Securities in New York. At Mizuho, Timothy was in the Corporate & Investment Banking department and assisted with providing strategic solutions to Fortune 500 clients with respect to Currency and Interest Rate Risk Management. Prior to Mizuho, Timothy worked as a Trading Desk Strategist at RBS Securities in Stamford, CT with an emphasis on Equity and Interest Rate Derivatives.

 

Timothy holds a B.A. in Applied Mathematics and B.A in Economics from the University of Connecticut. He is also a CAIA (Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst) Charter Holder.

Patrick Callahan Investment Analyst

Patrick Callahan is an Investment Analyst at Alternative Investment Group and is primarily responsible for hedge fund manager due diligence and performance analysis.  Patrick works closely with Chris Ayton focusing on European and Asian managers.

 

Patrick joined the firm in 2015 from FNY Capital Management, a proprietary trading group in New York City.  At FNY, Patrick traded global equities, commodities and derivatives across several different investment strategies.  Prior to joining FNY, Patrick was an Analyst at Advent Capital Management where he assisted the Senior Vice President with global portfolio management initiatives.  Patrick also worked as a Portfolio Management Associate at Citigroup Global Wealth Management in Stamford, CT.

 

Patrick holds a B.A. from the University of Connecticut with a major in Economics and a minor in Business Administration. Patrick is a level 2 candidate in the CFA and CAIA programs.

 

Joel Bailey Partner Relations Associate

Joel Bailey is a Partner Relations Associate at Alternative Investment Group, responsible for supporting our client service and business development efforts.  Joel joined the firm in November 2015.

 

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Joel was a Senior Associate at SS&C, providing investor relations support for the Administrator’s hedge fund and fund of hedge fund relationships. 

 

Joel holds a B.S. in Business Administration, major in Accounting and minor in Legal Studies and Computer Information Systems from Bryant University.

Diane Knuth Accounting Associate

Diane Knuth is responsible for all daily accounting within Alternative Investment Group. She also works closely with the firm's outside auditors and assists in compliance and human resources. She joined the firm in August 2000.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group, Diane worked at Knowles Financial Services where she provided accounting services for small businesses. Diane’s other work experience includes positions as an Assistant Treasurer at Bankers Trust Company, responsible for the management of the retirement plans of several large utility companies, and as a Defined Contribution Operations Manager at Professional Pensions.

Diane holds a B.A. degree from Fordham University.

Tina Reynolds Partner Relations Support/ Information Manager

Tina Reynolds provides executive support to both David Storrs and Maria Tapia. She is responsible for the administration of communications, travel, preparation of exhibits and analysis. She has direct contact with investors and consultants regarding investment information, portfolio update scheduling and contact information.

Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group in October 2002, Tina worked for Handy & Harman as Operations Assistant, providing administrative support to the Vice President of Operations as well as several other executives. Tina was previously an administrator at Aerotek, where she handled employee benefits and other programs.

Elizabeth S. Ritchie Executive Personal Assistant

Betsy Ritchie provides executive support to Stewart H. Greenfield, Chairman.


Prior to joining Alternative Investment Group in August 2017, Betsy was an entrepreneur, establishing and owning several businesses since 1999. The most recent was Organize!, which provided professional organizing, personal assistance, and estate management for homes and businesses. Before that, Betsy worked as an environmental engineer for Dames & Moore, managing large-scale hazardous waste projects for private and government clients. Prior to this, she worked as an aquatic biologist for the National Aquarium in Baltimore and Marine World/Africa USA, where she was responsible for aquatic and land animal care as well as the development of exhibits and a unique volunteer dive program.


Betsy holds a B.A. in Aquatic Biology from University of California, Santa Barbara, and an M.S. in Environmental Engineering from Massachusetts Institute of Technology.
